is a
French

marine biologist
, well known for his work in studying human impacts on global fisheries and in 2020 was the most cited fisheries scientist in the world. He is a professor and the project leader of the
Sea Around Us initiative
at the
Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries
at the
University of British Columbia
. He also served as Director of the UBC Fisheries Centre from November 2003 to October 2008.
In February 2023 Pauly was the co-recipient of the 2023
Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement
, with
Ussif Rashid Sumaila
. The award has been described as the ‘Nobel Prize for the Environment.’
