Summary

The debate on the role of the public university in Latin America "parked" on necessary but insufficient issues, such as: democratization of access, more funds for the expansion of the public system, better working conditions and student permanence. At the same time - in the context of the advance of the extreme right - barricades were erected against the system's budgetary asphyxiation, against the intervention of an authoritarian government in the elections, for the autonomy of the public university and freedom of thought. This Pocket Book brings to the debate another fundamental question: the meaning of the public university. As much as the public system grows or we have better working conditions, the teaching, research and extension agenda continues to be liberal, that is, aimed at meeting the needs of the job market or to meet an imitative standard of science, in general. based on productivism, innovation, alienated research and teaching, and welfare extension. A radical change in the meaning of the university in a dependent and neocolonial country like Brazil could place the university agenda in a finer tune with the struggles of organized social movements and - with that - contribute to the formation of a society beyond capital.
O debate sobre o papel da universidade pública na América Latina "estacionou" em questões necessárias, porém insuficientes, tais como: democratização do acesso, mais verbas para a expansão do sistema público, melhores condições de trabalho e permanência estudantil. Ao mesmo tempo - no contexto do avanço da extrema direita - foram erguidas barricadas contra a asfixia orçamentária do sistema, contra a intervenção de um governo autoritário nas eleições, pela autonomia da universidade pública liberdade de pensamento. Este Livro de Bolso traz para o debate uma outra questão primordial: o sentido da universidade pública. Por mais que o sistema público cresça ou que tenhamos melhores condições de trabalho, a agenda de ensino, pesquisa e extensão continua sendo liberal, isto é, voltada para atender as necessidades do mercado de trabalho ou para atender um padrão imitativo de ciência, em geral baseado no produtivismo, no inovacionismo, na pesquisa e ensino alienados e na extensão assistencialista. Uma alteração radical do sentido da universidade num país dependente e neocolonial como o Brasil poderá colocar a agenda universitária numa sintonia mais fina com as lutas dos movimentos sociais organizados e - com isso - contribuir para a formação de uma sociedade para além do capital.
