À partir de trois textes majeurs du xiie siècle ici traduits : la Vita Merlini du clerc gallois Geoffrey de Monmouth, la Vita Kentigerni et la Folie de Suibhne, texte mythologique irlandais, cet ouvrage dessine un portrait du devin celtique d'après ce que le Moyen Âge chrétien en conserve. Disqualifié par le prêtre ou l'évêque qui lui ôtent son privilège sacré, le devin ne possède plus guère que la science encyclopédique pour fonder sa légitimité. De son antique don prophétique, il ne reste plus que l'étrange discours d'une poésie sacrée où se lisent les signes incertains de l'Histoire. | ||
