Abstract The ability to conduct a periodontal examination is an important skill for dental students to learn as it is a relevant topic on state board, and national, examinations. This resource provides an introductory presentation on how to conduct a periodontal examination for predoctoral dental students prior to their initiation into clinical patient care. The resource may also be used for first-year graduate periodontology residents to review the basics of the periodontal examination prior to their initiation into surgical patient care. The resource was created with consideration of modern learning styles involving use of multimedia and technology in a format that is conducive to anytime, anywhere learning. As such, it provides a concise review of the periodontal examination through the use of a 20-minute video, a PowerPoint presentation, and a reading guide on how to administer the periodontal exam. Prior to beginning this resource, students should have good understanding of the anatomy of the periodontium and the various diseases that affect the periodontium.
