With an ageing and increasingly overweight global population, chronic illnesses treated surgically (e.g. hip replacements) may become very hazardous without effective antibiotics. Due to antibiotic misuse and a lack of successful development of new antibiotics, antibiotic resistance is an increasing global threat.
