Abstract The intention of this article is to investigate the relations between German immigrants and slavery in the space of Porto Alegre (RS), in the second half of the nineteenth century. We will focus our analysis on the granting of manumission, using these documents as clues to the social experiences shared by teutos and the captives of the capital of the province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul.
