Description
Summary:This article deals with the introduction in 1976 and 1979 in the West German dual system of vocational training of two mechanics (Bergmechaniker) and mining machine operators (Berg- und Maschinenmann). The two main objectives of this measure were, on one side, to promote a better adjustment of the miners to the wide transformations in underground mining technologies and, on the other hand, to contribute to a better integration in the vocational training system of the young school leavers with low or very low basic skills levels recruited by the mining companies. The article discusses this measure in the context of two of the main priorities of the German education and employment policies in the 1970es and 1980es, the professional and social integration of youth through basic vocational training and the better preparation of crisis-striken industrial regions to cope with economical adjustment processes.
