Summary:Dehydration caused from diarrhea in pediatric patients is one of the leading causes of admission to intensive care units. Nevertheless, no Cuban bibliography addresses with clarity and practical sense some of the main steps to be followed for treatment. A review of all aspects to be considered in the treatment for dehydration, with a simple approach, summarized, didactical and consistent with current concepts is performed. We warn on the frequent use of hypotonic solutions in our settings and the risk this implies. In this sense, we make suggestions.
