Description
Summary:Objective: To understand the experiences of family caregivers in the treatment of obesity in adolescents assisted by a multidisciplinary team in primary health care. Method: Qualitative research developed in a Primary Health Care Unit in Divinópolis/Minas Gerais, Brazil. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 family caregivers from April to July 2016. Three thematic categories emerged from content analysis. Results: Women, usually mothers and still alone, are the caregivers who unfold between the treatment of adolescents and work to support the family. The teaching of a new family habit by the example itself and the support of the multidisciplinary team are aspects that favor treatment. Control, wakefulness and restriction are difficulties that result in ineffective dialogue generating permissiveness and authoritarianism. Final considerations: Authoritative parental practices, new forms of care and inclusion of other guardians, if possible, the father are recommended.
