Summary:Abstract This workshop is designed to facilitate a team-learning exercise for medical residents and students to review the evidence related to handoff communication and understand best practices. The original research for this presentation was completed as part of a departmental grand rounds presentation. After participating in a team-based learning workshop, the author adapted her grand rounds presentation into this more interactive format. This comprehensive workshop allows faculty who are less familiar with evidence-based handoff communication to run a team learning activity in order to satisfy competency/ milestone objectives relating to communication and handoffs. This workshop can be done in a 90-minute didactic block. Learners should be given the two prereading articles prior to the workshop. Initially, learners take the quiz provided individually. Then, they form teams of three to complete the quiz. Answers are reviewed, and each group holds up a paper showing the answer that the team agreed on (or identifies it in some other way). Questions that less than 80% of the teams answered correctly are reviewed in the large group; other questions are not discussed in detail. Then, the remainder of the lecture is given, omitting components that the learners understood from the quiz. This workshop was conducted initially with an audience of physical medicine and rehabilitation residents. The qualitative feedback from residents was overwhelmingly positive. Subsequently, the workshop has been incorporated into the new resident orientation. It led to a resident quality improvement project about handoffs at one of the sites through which it was rotated.
