Summary: | Located in central Africa, Spanish Guinea had three Bantu languages and two Creoles. In the colony, the Spanish State applied a policy aiming at the linguistic homogenization. The education was the main way of spreading the Spanish language. Wishing to protect their linguistic and cultural identity, the natives opposed the Spanish education for long time. Ángel Barrera y Luyando, Governor General, undertook the reform and regulation of the colonial education system. He set up school programme and mandatory education. Àngel Barrera y Luyando also established the control of school absenteeism. At the same time, Spanish became the single and compulsory teaching language in the colony. This article analyzes the purpose, evolution and incidences of Ángel Barrera y Luyando's education policy in Spanish Guinea. |
