Summary:<p>The terms gastrointestinal stromal tumor refers to tumors of the connective tissue that can be located from the mouth to the anus. The case of a male patient, 64 years old, who attended consultation because of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in the form of melena with a slight decrease in hemoglobin, good general condition and records of previous good health is presented. Gastrointestinal stromal tumor was suspected from the initial examination through video-assisted endoscopy, a diagnosis confirmed later through immunohistochemical examination. The patient underwent surgery with wedge resection of the tumor mass and conservation of gastric and esophageal sphincter. The biopsy results coincided before and after surgery.</p>
