Summary: | Abstract Introduction Immunology can be a difficult discipline for first- and second-year medical students. Many, learning the various parts of the immune system for the first time, may express frustration that they cannot assemble the parts into a comprehensive big picture. The purpose of this resource is to aid medical students in the organization of their knowledge by providing a resource showing and explaining how the various mechanisms in an immune response come together to collectively defend against an intracellular microbe. The resource is particularly useful for students who are strong visual learners. Methods Students' responses on surveys indicated a global positioning system was needed so that they could see the interrelationships for each of the parts of an immune response. The following year, this PowerPoint diagram with links that explain various steps in the immune response to an intracellular microbe was created, using a virus as a model. This satellite map view of an immune response to an intracellular microbe (virus) was then implemented and refined to correct any ambiguities noted during its use. Results For years in which the map has been utilized, students' survey responses concerning their ability to understand the big picture in an immune response have much improved. Students have remarked that they find the map to be a useful tool for their learning and when reviewing for the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 examination. Discussion This map was presented in a poster at the 2012 annual meeting of the International Society of Medical Science Educators and further revised following comments gathered at that meeting. It should prove useful to medical educators teaching immunology and to their students, especially in medical schools with modern, highly integrated curricula. |
