Abstract This article examines the context and the implementation of the policy of affirmative action in public universities in Brazil today as atangible social reality. Generally, traces a brief history of the emergence of this policy in some countries with strong racial asymmetry, discusses its importance for overcoming inequalities in higher education and the need for strengthening and institutionalizing those actions at UFMA.
