Summary: | Free-range poultry has become an important source of income for small farmers in municipalities at backlands of Alagoas. Despite this, little is known about the real financial performance of the activity as well as its operating costs. In this scenario, the objective of the presentstudy was to verify the effective operational cost of egg production in a hick system atmunicipalities of Santana do Ipanema and São José da Tapera, Alagoas/BR. Technical visits were maketo poultry producers, and simplified field booklets were deliveredfor taking notes, contemplating productivity indicators such as feed consumption, expenses, investments, revenues, input prices, family consumption, losses, number of animals in production, selling price of the product, in which the research participants received the necessary guidance on filling in this material. As a result, it was found that 45% of the producers studied use commercial feed in the poultry feed and average production cost of R$ 3.17/dozen eggs, while 55% of the producers produce the feed onthe property, with a cost of R$ 2.65/dozen eggs produced. The study also found that the commercial feed, during the period surveyed, had a price variation between R$ 1.37 to R$ 1.40/kg, whereas the feed manufactured on the property varied from R$ 1.19 to R$ 1.24/kg, getting 11.40% cheaper than commercial feed. Regarding egg production, productivity ranged from 3155 to 5046 dozen eggs/month, totaling 28,810 dozen produced from March to September 2019. When individualizing the group, those who produce their own feed obtained a productivity that varied from 1682 to 2576 dozen eggs/month, reaching 14013 dozen in the period, while the group of producers that used commercial feed reached productivity between 1473 to 2373 dozen, with a total of 14797 dozen, which is 5.60% more when compared to the group that makes the feed on the property. The monthly production cost also changed, ranging from R $ 2.44 to R $ 5.43 per dozen produced. The study showed that the producers involved in the research are divided betweenthose who use commercial feed and those who manufacture the feed on the property to feed the chickens. The data obtained showed an average cost of R$ 3.26/dozen eggs produced, driven by the variation in the price of inputs, whichare imported from other regions of the country. The collective purchase of inputs can help to reduce the cost of production |
