| Summary: | Objective: to characterize the interviewed subjects regarding age frame, pathology and amputation level; to evaluate the quality of life of these patients. Method: a quantitative study. It had the participation of 11 patients submitted to amputation in 2009 in a public hospital from Porto Alegre, RS. The data were collected in the hospital records and by means of interview. Analysis utilized Epi-Info Software and WHOQOL-Bref instrument. Results: indication that 36.4% of the subjects evaluated their quality of life as neither bad nor good while 27.3% reported it as bad and very bad. The most frequent amputations refer to Diabetes Melittus, masculine sex and age frame between 41 and 60 years old. Conclusions: when people experience it, they face a condition that implies changes in their way of moving, working and getting along socially.
