Summary: | Lubricants application in vulvovaginal atrophy

Yu.E. Dobrokhotova, S.A. Khlynova
Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, Moscow, Russian Federation

Interim periods as well as the postmenopausal period are extremely important in relation to the development of the disease and the complications associated with estrogen deficiency. Although vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA) is a consequence of estrogen deficiency, an application of systemic menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) does not affect the symptoms of genitourinary syndrome of menopause. About 40% of women receiving MHT with corrigent vasomotor symptoms have persistent symptoms of VVA. An epithelium of the vaginal mucosa and urethra is most sensitive to estrogen deficiency; therefore, the estrogen administration at the local level in the development of VVA as a manifestation of genitourinary syndrome in perimenopause and postmenopause is the most optimal and effective treatment method. Women who do not want to use hormonal drugs or have contraindications to this therapy, an application of water-based lubricants is prescribed to improve the moistening of the vaginal mucosa, relieve symptoms of dyspareunia, burning, dysuria, bleeding after sexual contact, increase the sensibility and quality of sex life. Water-based lubricants are the most versatile of all types of vaginal moisturizers, because they have a neutral composition, are safe for long-term use, and can also be used in conjunction with barrier contraception.

Key words: genitourinary syndrome of menopause, vulvovaginal atrophy, female sexual dysfunction, dyspareunia, local hormonal therapy, lubricant.
For citation: Dobrokhotova Yu.E., Khlynova S.A.
