Summary:The Cereus jamacaru (mandacaru) is a typical northeastern backlands plant belonging to the family Cactaceae. The mandacaru being a succulent plant in a region that spends long periods of drought is used by farmers who require alternative survival of their livestock. However, this research aims to identify the knowledge, collection techniques and use of mandacaru in town Quandu, Well municipality of Trenches, the state of Alagoas. The study is of an exploratory nature based on field work with the participation of 30 farmers who answered a semi-structured questionnaire. Based on data analysis 70% of respondents correspond to the male gender, all participants know the mandacaru, 83% use only for forage because the mandacaru is a plant that is always independent of climate alive, it is the only source of food for the flocks for long periods of drought. 92% prefer to collect adult plants but also collect small. Each use of purpose there is a specific technique and is mainly collected the roots and branches. Farmers know the plant, but do not bother to preserve it. As fodder, the most prominent use. The types of greater evidence collection were that respondents withdraw only part of the plant. However, the frequency of the plant can collect in a previous future damage the same.
