The clinical case scenario involves a neonate born with esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula scheduled for thoracoscopic repair, highlighting several anesthetic challenges. After presentation of the case stem, the instructor moderates a student-centered group discussion using a series of questions and a review of relevant literature. This problem-based learning discussion was presented at the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia winter meeting in San Diego, California, in March 2010 and subsequently presented twice at the annual scientific meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists in Washington, DC, in October 2012. A variety of anesthesia care providers, including anesthesiology trainees and anesthesiologists from academic institutions and private practice, participated in the discussion, and the evaluations were uniformly positive. The resource has also been used at the author's institution with anesthesiology residents and pediatric anesthesiology fellows as a part of their problem-based learning discussion curriculum. | ||
