Gross anatomy, the study of anatomical structures that can be seen by unassisted vision, has long been a subject of fascination for artists. In de bundel Anatomy Live gaan verschillende wetenschappers in op de relatie tussen de geschiedenis van het anatomische lichaam en het theater. In de openbare ontledingen in het historische anatomische theater van de vroege renaissance werd de basis gelegd voor wat in de daaropvolgende eeuwen het wetenschappelijke beeld van het lichaam zou gaan bepalen. Dat laatste geschiedde in een theater in de vorm van een voorstelling.
