Summary:<p>The allelopathic effect of different concentrations of rice husk residues (Vigna unguiculata L.) was investigated with a view to determining its effect on the growth and field of four cowpea varieties. The results indicated that the extracts at 40g brought about considerable inhibition in the morphological parameters studied including plant height, stem girth, number of branches, number of leaves, and leaf area irrespective of the stages of development than the extracts at 40g concentration. The extracts had significant effect on the plant height of variety 4 (NGB/06/0055) at 40g relative to the control. This was also observed for the stem girth and number of branches of cowpea in variety 3 (NGB/06/1642) at 40g concentration thereby indicating that the degrees of inhibition were concentration dependent. It was apparent that rice husk residues at 40g concentration had more inhibitory effect on the yield of cowpea than at 20g concentration level. Variety 4 had the highest number of seeds per plant (147) while the least was recorded in variety 3 (44) relative to the control.</p>
