Summary: | Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd was one of the highly controversial modernist scholar leaders of Liberal Islam. Abu Zayd was unafraid to criticize the authenticity and sanctity of the Quran by sparking the concept of desecration of the Quran. That is what encourages the writer to reveal in more detail the concept of desecration of the Quran aceording to Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd and its implications towards the Quranic studies. This study uses a qualitative method by taking primary and secondary data from the literature (library research). The primary data used are books or articles written by Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, while the secondary ones are books or other studies related to the issue. The analysis of the data used here is the content analysis, namely a technique used to analyze and comprehend texts. Based on the results of the study, it is showed that the main factor behind Abu Zayd's concept of desecration of the Quran is the use of the hermeneutic method to interpret the Quran. In fact, hermeneutics, as a method of interpretation, shall only be appropriate applied to the Bible, not to the Quran. In the aftermath of using this hermeneutic method to interpret the Quran, then Abu Zayd sparked the concept of desecration of the Quran. The concept was born from his controversial ideas and thoughts, and the most important are: (1) The Quran is a cultural product; (2) The Quran is a historical phenomenon; (3) The Quran is a humane text and work of Muhammad; (4) The Quran is no more than an ordinary Arabic text, like other texts; and (5) It is allowed for anyone, even an atheist, to interpret the Quran. The concept of desecration of the Quran triggered by Abu Zayd contains many negative implications, and the most critical ones are: (1) deconstruction of the Quran; (2) the relativism of interpretation; and (3) distrust and insult towards the Muslim scholars. Keywords: Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd, The Concept of Desecration, The Quran. |
