Summary: | This study explains a performance prediction of diamond pin-fin cooling of gas turbine blade. The aim is to investigate the heat transfer coefficient(HTC) and friction factor (f) inside the cooling passage. The steady RANS with k-epsilon turbulence model was performed by two stages investigation: first, validation of an existing circular staggered array of pin-fin cooling that has been investigated experimentally by other researcher. Three types structured mesh from coarse (Δy+ = 10.95) to fine (Δy+ = 2.38) were optimized for mesh refinement study. Second, further investigation of the diamond fin cooling was simulated by adopting the scenario of mesh generation based on the optimum result from validation. Simulation were performed at the same initials and boundary conditions as the experiment, and varying Reynolds number from 9,000 to 36,000 The simulation results indicate that validation can be considered acceptable by generating mesh up to 1.56 milion elements with fine resolution (Δy+ = 2.38). CFD predicted that the performance of the cooling system diamond fin C2A is greater than the diamond fin C1A. although over-predition data is clearly seen after the second diamond fin row for HTC simulation. Investigation of two different lay-out of diamond-fin cooling (C1A and C2A) shows that the HTC of pin-fin C2A is greater than the HTC of diamond-fin C1A as the effect of different turbulence around the diamond-fin cooling, However it should be noted that the friction factor on the use of diamond fin C2A is also greater than the type C1A. |
