Language as a tool of human communication is closely related to the science of semantics the work that goes on the meaning and symbols. Communication is divided into two, namely oral communication and written communication. In the process of learning the lessons of oral communication used when speaking and reading, while the written communication is used when writing lesson. When writing lessons such as essay writing is usually the students use the word experiencing widespread change, narrowed, the total change, rarefaction, and coarsening. The purpose of this research is, (1) describing the shape of the change of meaning in the narrative essay by 10th grade of SMA Negeri 1 Geyer, (2) explained the factor causing the change of meaning in the narrative essay by 10th grade of SMA Negeri 1 Geyer. Data used in this study are the words that change meaning in narrative essay by 10th grade. Source data used in thid study is a student narrative essay. The technique used to collect the data is interview, techniques refer, and techniques note. The technique of data analysis using intralingual match. The result of this study found five forms of changing the meaning of them, changing the meaning widespread, changing the meaning narrowed, a total change of meaning, the meaning changes feathering, and change the meaning of coarsening. Also found the factor causing the change of meaning among other things, developments in technology, sosial cultural development, difference in the use of the field, their association, exchange of the senses, the difference in response, their condensation, grammatical processes, and development term. Among the nine factor that cause change that meaning, there are two factor that can not be found changing the meaning, namely the exchange of feedback and development terms.
