Description
Summary:Background: Elderly are people who have reached the age of 60 years and above. Elderly balance will decline caused by intrinsic factors such as musculoskeletal disorders, namely a decrease in muscle strength. Dynamic balance is the body's ability to maintain body position where (COG) is always changing and moving. Strengthening exercises are exercises that are used to improve muscle function and muscle endurance. Quadriceps muscle strength and dorsal plantar flexor necessary to balance the body either static or dynamic. Objective: To determine the effect of quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises and dorsal plantar flexors as well as the difference between the influence of quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises and dorsal plantar flexors to improving the dynamic balance of the elderly. Methods: The study is quasi experiment with two group pre test and post test design, the sample group I given quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises and group II do strengthening exercises dorsal and plantar flexor muscles for 4 weeks with a frequency of 3 times a week. Balance measurements performed by Time Up and Go Test (TUG). Data analysis using Wilcoxon test to test the effect and influence of different test using Mann Whitney test. Results: There was the influence of quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises to increase the dynamic balance in the elderly after the performed statistical tests obtained using Wilcoxon test p-value of 0.001. There is the influence of muscle strengthening exercises dorsal and plantar flexors to the improvement of dynamic balance in the elderly are the result of p-value of 0.001, and there are no differences in the effects of the two groups after statistical test using Mann Whitney test was obtained p-value of 1.000. Conclusion: There is no difference between the effect of quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises with exercise prnguatan dorsal and plantar flexor muscles to increase the dynamic balance in the elderly.
