Summary: | Breast cancer is a cancer that that is caused by abnormal cell growth into the breast tissue through the duct wall and invade the breast tissue. Breast cancer ranks first have a fairly high mortality rate in women in the world. Some anticancer treatment efforts have not given the maximum effect so that the necessary research anticancer drugs derived from natural materials. In this study was conducted test to determine the cytotoxic effect extract ethanol sweet potato tubers of purple and orange (Ipomoea batatas L.) on breast cancer cells MCF-7 and class of chemical compound contained in it. Sweet potato tubers of purple and orange extracted by maceration method use ethanol 96%. Extract ethanol sweet potato tubers of purple and oranye was conducted cytotoxic test with MTT method, followed by a qualitative class of chemical compound test by method of TLC (Thin Layer Chromatograpy). The results was obtained by the extraction yield of the extract ethanol sweet potato tubers of purple and orange respectively 20,50 and 20,39%. The results of cytotoxicity assay showed that the extract ethanol tubers of purple sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) has cytotoxic effects that are moderate on breast cancer cells MCF-7 with IC50 value of 141.25 µg/mL. The extract ethanol of orange sweet potato tubers have IC50 value of > 200 µg/mL. TLC qualitative test results obtained most classes of compounds in the sample are flavonoids.
