Summary: | Bitter melon fruit contains compounds that act as antihyperglycemic. Secondary metabolites in bitter melon fruit has a range of properties so that the necessary polarity solvent such as ethanol 96%. This study was conducted to determine the antidiabetic activity of 96% ethanol extract of bitter melon fruit (Momordica charantia L.) on Wistar rats induced alloxan and determine classes of compounds contained therein. The design of this study is experimental with pre and post test with control group design. Wistar rats of 15 were divided into 5 groups, group 1 was gived distilled water, group 2 was gived metformin 45 mg/kgBW, group 3, 4 and 5 were gived ethanol extract 96% of the dose of 150 mg/kgBW, 300 mg/kgBW and 600 mg/kgBW. Previous rats induced by alloxan 150 mg/kgBW, 4 days later the rat blood glucose levels> 200 mg/dL is used for research. Data were analyzed with MANOVA followed by LSD. TLC test was used to determine the compound. The average result reduction in blood sugar levels after the 14-day administration of the extracts on the positive control (94.33 ± 19.55 mg/dL), a dose of 150 mg/kgBW, 300 mg/kgBW and 600 mg/kgBW respectively (102 ± 13.23 mg/dL), (114.33 ± 7.23 mg/dL) and (147.33 ± 9.61 mg/dL). Dose that effectively lower blood sugar levels is a dose of 150 mg/kgBW equivalent to metformin. TLC test results showed 96% ethanol extract of bitter melon fruit contains steroidal saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids and phenolic. |
