Summary:Mathematics education is one of the important essence in education, as it relates to the context in daily life. In mathematics, students are required to have problem solving skills, reasoning ability, and the ability to think creatively. International assessment TIMSS results, showing that mathematics achievement in Indonesia is far behind other countries including the results of the assessment on the content of algebra domain. Detailed analysis is needed in order errors and the factors can be seen to reduce the errors that mathematics achievement could be improved. This study aimed to describe students' mistakes and a large percentage of error and to know the causes of students in a math problem algebra-based TIMSS. This research is a qualitative descriptive. The subjects were students of class VIII B of SMP Negeri 2 Tawangsari totaling 31 students. The data collection technique using the test, interview and documentation. Data validation was done by triangulation technique by comparing the test data, interviews and documentation. Data analysis technique conducted in stages, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion or verification. The analytical framework developed by the category mistake Newman. The results were obtained four types of errors and the percentage for each type of comprehension error 59.36%, transformation error 28,77%, process skill error 10.04% and encoding error 1,83%. The results showed an error of understanding and transformation more dominant than the other errors. Generally the causes of error is low reasoning ability of students. The most influential factor is the students are not accustomed to working on the problems that students are less practiced TIMSS questions reasoning.
