The problems of the study are the composition of writing procedure text in discourse competence and linguistic competence. This composition used by scoring to know of the students' mastery. Therefore, it would get of the problems faced by the students. Besides that the problems faced comes from the interview with the students. Thus, it will get implication in language teaching from the composition in writing and problems faced by the students. The research uses ethnography research. This study uses composition in writing procedure text, observation and interview in collecting the data. The technique for analyzing the data is by scoring system. Scoring system is used to describe the students' mastery in writing procedure text. The result of the study shows that the students' in discourse competence belongs to good category and the students' in linguistic competence belongs to poor category. There are some problems faced by the first year students of SMP N 1 Wiradesa Pekalongan, namely; cohesion, coherence, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. The problem faced mostly by the students is grammar. Then, the theories that used by research have gap between the result of research findings. These cause many implications in language teaching. The implication will make the teacher be more effective in conducting language teaching.
