Summary: | Number sense merupakan pemahaman seseorang terhadap bilangan dan operasinya, serta kecenderungan seseorang untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan matematis secara intuitif, fleksibel, dan tidak terikat pada algoritma atau prosedur standar. Kemampuan ini dapat meningkatkan kepercayaan diri seseorang ketika berhadapan dengan bilangan dan operasinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus. Subjek penelitian adalah 6 orang siswa SMP kelas VIII yang telah mempelajari materi bilangan. Ada 4 komponen number sense yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu (1) understanding number magnitude, (2) mental computation, (3) computational estimation, dan (4) judging the reasonableness of results. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan subjek dengan kemampuan awal matematis tinggi sudah memenuhi komponen understanding number magnitude, namun belum memenuhi komponen mental computation, computational estimation, dan judging reasonableness of results. Subjek dengan kemampuan awal matematis sedang juga sudah memenuhi komponen understanding number magnitude, namun belum memenuhi komponen mental computation dan judging reasonableness of results. Salah satu subjek dengan kemampuan awal matematis sedang telah memenuhi komponen computational estimation sedangkan subjek lainnya belum. Subjek dengan kemampuan awal matematis rendah sudah memenuhi komponen understanding number magnitude, namun belum memenuhi komponen mental computation dan judging reasonableness of results. Salah satu subjek dengan kemampuan awal matematis rendah telah memenuhi komponen computational estimation sedangkan subjek lainnya belum. Number sense is one's understanding about numbers and their operation, as well as one's tendency to solve mathematical problem intuitively, flexibly, and not bound to standard procedures. This ability can increase someone's confidence when dealing with numbers and their operations. This study used a qualitative research method with descriptive approach. The research subjects chosen were VIII junior high school students who has learned about numbers. There are 4 components used in this study, (1) understanding number magnitude, (2) mental computation, (3) computational estimation, dan (4) judging the reasonableness of results. The results of this study indicate that subjects with high initial mathematical ability have fulfilled the understanding number magnitude component, but have not fulfilled the mental computation, computational estimation, and judging reasonableness of results components. Subjects with moderate initial mathematical ability also fulfilled the understanding number magnitude component, but did not fulfill the mental computation and judging reasonableness of results components. One of the subjects with moderate initial mathematical ability has fulfilled the computational estimation component while the other subjects have not. Subjects with low initial mathematical ability have fulfilled the understanding number magnitude component, but have not fulfilled the mental computation and judging reasonableness of results components.
