Summary:This study is entitled "The Use of Crossword Puzzle in Improving Students' Vocabulary Mastery." This study aimed to discover whether or not crossword puzzle can improve students' vocabulary mastery. It aimed to investigate the students' responses toward the use of crossword puzzles in learning English vocabulary. In this study, a quasi-experimental design was employed. The participants of this study were two classes of eight grade students in Junior high school in Siak, Riau that one being an experimental group and the other a control group. The data were gained through a pre-test, a post-test, and questionnaires. The data from pre-test and post-test were then analyzed by using a paired sample t-test on SPSS 16.0 for windows. The data from questionnaires were analyzed using a Likert scale. The computation results of independent t-test on post test show that tobt (3.055) is higher than tcrit (2.00). The result of dependent t-test presents that the significance 2 tailed was 0.00. It is lower than 0.05 (0.00 < 0.05). Therefore the null hypothesis was rejected. It means that the crossword puzzles given to experimental group could improve students' vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, the results of questionnaires show that most students (81.2%) gave positive responses toward the use of crossword puzzles in learning English vocabulary. The students loved the use of crossword puzzles in learning English vocabulary and enjoyed classroom activities during the implementation of crossword puzzles. In addition, crossword puzzles not only could improve their vocabulary mastery, but also motivate the students in teaching learning processes. As the result, this study recommends the use of crossword puzzles in teaching English vocabulary.
