Description
Summary:This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of using IPA as a teaching strategy in high school level for improving EFL learners' pronunciation skills and comparing it to traditional teaching methods. The research examined whether the use of the IPA enhances the pronunciation skills of Indonesian high school students. A quantitative quasi-experimental design was employed, with 30 Indonesian high school students divided into two groups: an experimental group (taught using the IPA) and a control group (taught using traditional methods). Both groups received equal instruction time over 5 weeks, with feedback provided throughout the study. A post-test, consisting of a reading aloud task with targeted phonemes (/θ/, /ð/, /f/, /v/) in the reading passage and a presentation task, was administered at the end of the study. The findings demonstrated the effectiveness of teaching pronunciation through the use of the IPA. The experimental group, which learned pronunciation using the IPA, achieved significantly higher scores in the speaking test compared to the control group. The IPA facilitated a more accurate and systematic approach to learning pronunciation, resulting in improved skills among the experimental group. These results provide valuable insights for EFL instructors, highlighting the benefits of incorporating the IPA into pronunciation instruction. By utilizing the IPA, instructors can enhance the effectiveness of their teaching methods and promote more accurate pronunciation learning. This study contributes to the advancement of EFL pedagogy and offers practical guidance for instructors seeking to improve their learners' pronunciation skills.
