Summary: | The present study examines speech acts performed on the final round of Miss Universe and self images brought forward by the finalists of Miss Universe pageant in 2004-2008. The data were 25 sets of utterances produced by 25 Miss Universe finalists (Top 5 finalists) in 2004-2008. Those data were transcribed from five videos downloaded from www.youtube.com. Furthermore, those utterances were analyzed based on Searle's speech acts categories (1979:12-19) and transitivity of Eggins (1994:220). Other supporting theories such as Hermes' framework on assertiveness (1999), existentialist feminism of Simone de Beauvoir (1949) and greetings theory were also used in the discussion. The study found assertives speech act as the most frequent speech act category. However, there was no finalist producing declaratives speech acts. It was also found that the finalists showed six kinds of self images; Being powerful, good personalities, concerned, polite, friendly, and attractive. These results indicate that all finalists have performed speech act following Searle's categories (1979:12-19) which are assertives, directives, commisives, and expressives. In this case, assertive is mostly applied by the finalists because of the duration factor on the final round of Miss Universe. The self images collected in this research prove that the finalists constructed positive self images through their utterances in front of the judges and audiences in order to win the crown of Miss Universe. |
