Description
Summary:The present research is entitled "Representation of the Main Character's Perceptions of Freedom in Jon Krakauer's novel Into the Wild". It is aimed to find out the representations of freedom in the main character and conflicts he experienced with the ways of dealing the conflicts in the novel. The data resources of this research are the novel of Jon Krakauer Into the Wild. The research was conducted by using the descriptive qualitative method. The research uses textual analysis. The tool of analysis for the research was the concept of ego defense mechanisms proposed by Anna Freud. The result of the research indicates that there are three representations of freedom, those are: disobeying the rules, travelling anywhere he wants, and helping poor people. The conflicts he experienced are disappointment with his parents, the inconvenience of living in his society, the difficulties living in wilderness, ignorance to other people, and dissatisfaction to the condition of his country. In conclusion, freedom can be represented in many ways and everyone has conflicts in his or her life with many ways in dealing the conflicts. It depends on how he or she controls the ego in mind.
