Summary: | The title of this study is The Teachers' Strategies in Overcoming Students' Difficulties in Writing Descriptive Text. This study aims to investigate the teachers' strategies in overcoming their students' difficulties in writing descriptive text and to find out what the teachers' reasons of using the strategies. The respondents of this study were three English teachers in three schools in Bandung. The study used qualitative method where the data were gained through questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was adopted from conducted study by Kurnia (2009) and New South Wales Department of Education and Training (2007). Then, those data were analyzed descriptively. Based on the data analysis result, it shows that the three teachers use some strategies in overcoming students'difficulties in writing descriptive text. Those strategies are modelled writing, visual scaffolding, guided writing, independent writing, cooperative learning, writing conference, material scaffolding, content scaffolding, number head together, and making diary. Moreover, the three teachers have their own reasons in using those strategies. The reasons of using the strategies are to develop students' background knowledge in preparation for writing, to lead to greater motivation towards learning, to facilitate the understanding and integration of new information, to provide opportunities for reviewing of knowledge, practice and discussion of topic, to overcome students' difficulties in generating their idea in writing, and to help students understand why they are doing the work and why it is important, and to make writing as a habit for students. Based on the findings of the study, teachers can apply those strategies in teaching writing. The strategies are proposed to overcome students' difficulties in writing, especially in writing descriptive text. Additionally, it is recommended that further research in similar studies in different contexts, should be conducted. |
