Summary: | This present study is entitled "Being Ugly As a Choice: Analyzing Characters' Agency and Subjectivity in Scott Westerfeld's Uglies". It aims to identify the portrayal of the Uglies and the Beauties and also the ways of characters' choices which reflect subjectivity and self agency in the text of the novel entitled Uglies (2005) by Scott westerfeld. To conduct the study, the writer employs various theories, namely those in relation to subjectivity and self agency. A discussion on fantasy as a genre in young adult literature is also useful to support a deeper analysis of the novel. This present research is qualitative in nature where textual analysis is employed. The present study reveals that in this novel the Pretties and the Uglies are portrayed in three aspects, i.e., physical appearances, lifestyle, and characters' traits. The writer also finds the Pretties who have beautiful features are constructed and programmed to be the same and symmetry. Besides that the Pretties will lose their true personality, memory, and the most important thing is they will lose their freedom. While the Uglies, although they have imperfect physical appearance, but it is genuine, natural, and each of them has uniqueness that makes them different with others. Concerns about the way of characters' choices which reflect subjectivity and self agency the findings show that the idea of alienated subjectivity can be found from the characters' choices of lifestyle and fashion, the lifestyle of the Uglies which reflects alienated subjectivity is remote, separated, conventional, and the fashioned which reflects alienated subjectivity is the modest and old-fashioned. While the agency is reflected from the choice that the Uglies make, which is to stay ugly through their action and language which against the Pretties and Special Circumstance. |
