Summary:Senior High School students in Indonesia have poor ability in speaking English, even though they have learnt English for at least six years. There are some aspects which might cause this problem; one of them is because the students find difficulties in conveying the message during their speaking activity. However, the students might employ some strategies to deal with their speaking difficulties. This study investigated the students' speaking difficulties, kinds of strategies they use to solve the difficulties, and the effectiveness of those communication strategies. In addition, this study used descriptive method to interpret result of the research. Instruments used to gain data in this research are observation and questionnaire. Moreover, this study reveals that some kinds of difficulties which are encountered by the students when they speak English are vocabulary, clustering, grammar, pronunciation, and performance variable. Besides that, when they face speaking difficulties, the students employ communication strategies such as using fillers, miming, self-correction, word coinage, resourcing, paraphrasing, gesturing, self-repetition, language switch, translation, approximation, and appeals for assistance. This study suggests that the teacher should help the students to improve their speaking ability and optimize the use of communication strategies to solve the students' speaking difficulties.
