Hasil studi pendahuluan peneliti memperlihatkan fakta bahwa ketiga kemampuan berpikir tersebut ternyata kurang difasilitasi dalam proses pembelajaran fisika, padahal kemampuan berpikir tersebut sangat diperlukan siswa untuk menghadapi berbagai tantangan di masa depan. Pembelajaran levels of inquiry (LOI) dipandang sebagai salah satu alternatif solusi pembelajaran yang memiliki tahapan-tahapan untuk membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir meliputi kemampuan pengetahuan (knowing), penerapan (applying) dan penalaran (reasoning), oleh karena itu tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai seberapa besar kontribusi yang diberikan oleh LOI dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pengetahuan (knowing), penerapan (applying) dan penalaran (reasoning) siswa. Instrumen tes yang digunakan untuk mengukur ketiga kemampuan tersebut secara total terdiri dari 20 soal pilihan ganda dan 12 soal constructed response yang diadaptasi dari framework Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), dengan nilai reliabilitas masing-masing 0,53 dan 0,55 berada pada kriteria sedang serta memiliki nilai validitas konten 0,56 ≤ validitas ≤ 1 dengan kriteria sedang hingga tinggi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kuantitatif-deskriptif dengan desain penelitian one-group pretest-posttest design dan diterapkan pada 37 sampel siswa kelas 8A di salah satu SMPN Bandung. Melalui analisis data dengan menggunakan effect size-Cohen, diperoleh hasil penelitian yaitu terdapat peningkatan pada kemampuan knowing, applying dan reasoning siswa setelah diterapkannya model pembelajaran LOI dengan nilai effect size-Cohen masing-masing sebesar 2,89, 3,85 dan 3,90, hal tersebut mengindikasikan bahwa penerapan model pembelajaran levels of inquiry ternyata memberikan kontribusi yang besar (large effect) terhadap peningkatan kemampuan knowing, applying dan reasoning siswa SMP pada materi optik. The preliminary investigations researcher result exhibited fact that the learning physics at schools not facilitated student for training knowing, applying and reasoning enough, whereas that thinking ability are necessary for student to fronting the challenges in the future. Levels of inquiry models (LOI) as view as one of alternative solution which has the syntax to help students for improving thinking ability include the ability of knowing, applying and reasoning. So the purpose of this research was to obtain information about the contribution of implementation levels of inquiry model (LOI) to improve knowing, applying and reasoning. Test instrument used to measure that ability, it consists of 20 multiple choice questions and 12 constructed response which adapted from the framework Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), the reliability values of each were 0.53 and 0.55 in the moderate criteria and the range of content validity value was 0.56 ≤ val ≤ 1 with a moderate to high criterion. This research used quantitative-descriptive research methods with a one-group pretest-posttest design and it applied to 37 sample students of class 8A in one of SMPN Bandung. Based on the results of data analysis using effect size, it obtained that knowing, applying and reasoning of students increased after the implementation of LOI model with the effect size of each were 2.89, 3.85 and 3.90, this means that the implementation of levels of inquiry models gave a large effect or contribution to improving student ability of knowing, applying and reasoning on the subject of optics.
