Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah studi yang bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi kemampuan dan kesulitan siswa kelas sepuluh dalam menulis teks News Item di dalam sebuah kelas yang terdiri dari 40 siswa di sebuah sekolah negeri di Bandung. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian kualitatif, khususnya studi kasus, sebagaimana penelitian ini menginvestigasi sebuah fenomena dalam konteks yang sebenarnya. Data dalam penelitian ini didapatkan dalam bentuk analisis dokumen, khususnya anilisis teks siswa. Teks-teks tersebut di kumpulkan dari satu pertemuan kelas Bahasa Inggris di sekolah. Enam buah teks diambil sebagai sampel. Sampel-sampel tersebut mewakili siswa yang berkemampuan rendah, sedang dan tinggi. Kemampuan dan kesulitan siswa kemudian diidentifikasi menggunakan Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994). Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kebanyakan siswa memiliki kontrol yang baik dalam hal schematic structure dan language features dari teks News Item, dan juga dalam hal kohesi teks. Bagaimanapun juga, siswa masih memerlukan peningkatan dalam mengaplikasikan Source element, material and verbal process, menentukan kata hubung yang sesuai, membuat kalimat, dan menggunakan tanda baca. Berdasarkan temuan tersebut, direkomendasikan untuk memberikan lebih banyak masukan untuk siswa agar mereka memiliki kemampuan untuk menulis teks News Item lebih baik lagi. Siswa juga sebaiknya diberikan waktu tambahan untuk berlatih menulis. This research paper presents the study aiming to investigate the tenth graders' ability and difficulties in writing News Item text in a class which consisted of 40 students in one public school in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. This research used a qualitative research design, specifically case study as it investigates a phenomenon in its real context. The data in this study were obtained from documents analysis, especially students' texts analysis. The texts were collected from a meeting of English subject at school. Six texts were taken as the samples. The samples represent the low, middle and high achiever students. The students' ability and difficulties were then identified using Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1994).The findings revealed that most students have a good control about the schematic structure, the language features of News Item Text, and also the text's cohesion. However, the students still need improvement in applying source element, material and verbal processes, determining the appropriate conjunction, creating sentences and using punctuation. Based on the findings, it is recommended that more input should be given to the students to have the capacity to write News Item Text more successfully. The students should also be given more time in writing.
