Summary: | The present study is aimed at investigating the type of Indonesian cultural words found in the novel Negeri 5 Menara (Fuadi, 2012) and the translated novel, the translation techniques used by the translator in translating Indonesian cultural words into English, the most frequently-applied strategy of translation applied by the translator, and the factors influence the translator apply the most frequently-applied strategy. Two kinds of data were used in this study: objective and genetic data. Objective data in the form of Indonesian cultural words found in the novel and the translation novel is collected through indirect observation method. The genetic data in the form of information related to factors influence the translator chose certain translation strategy is collected through indirect interview with the translator. To analyze the kinds of cultural words found in the novel and how those cultural words were translated, three primary theories were used: cultural words classification (Newmark, 1988), translation techniques (Molina & Albir, 2002), and translation strategies (Venuti, 2004). The result of the study shows that there are various kinds of cultural words found in the novel and most of them were translated using target language oriented-techniques techniques or domestication strategy. The factors influence the translator applied the domestication strategy is cultural differences and author's intention to get wider readership. ----------- Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki macam-macam kata budaya Indonesia yang ditemukan dalam novel Negeri 5 Menara (Fuadi, 2012) dan novel terjemahannya, meneliti teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan penerjemah dalam menerjemahkannya, juga meneliti strategi penerjemahan yang paling banyak digunakan oleh penerjemah dan mencari tahu faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi penerjemah lebih suka menggunakan strategi penerjemahan tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua macam data: data objektif dan genetik. Data objektif berupa kata-kata budaya Indonesia yang ditemukan dalam novel diperoleh menggunakan metode observasi tidak langsung. Data genetik berupa informasi mengenai faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi penerjemah lebih memilih menggunakan strategi penerjemahan tertentu diperoleh dari hasil wawancara tidak langsung dengan penerjemah. Untuk meneliti jenis kata budaya yang ditemukan dan bagaimana penerjemah menerjemahkannya digunakan tiga teori utama: klasifikasi kata budaya (Newmark, 1988), teknik-teknik penerjemahan (Molina & Albir, 2002), dan strategi penerjemahan (Venuti, 2004). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat berbagai macam kata budaya Indonesia yang terdapat dalam novel dan kebanyakan dari mereka diterjemahkan menggunakan teknik-teknik yang cenderung pada bahasa target atau strategi domestikasi. Dan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kecenderungan penerjemah adalah perbedaan budaya dan tujuan penulis untuk memperbanyak jumlah pembaca. |
