Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap kemampuan pemahaman dan komunikasi matematis pada siswa SMP yang mendapatkan pembelajaran matematika dengan bahasa asing (kelas ekperimen) dan pembelajaran konvensional (kelas kontrol). Adapun kemampuan pemahaman yang diukur adalah kemampuan pemahaman instrumental dan relasional. Selain mengungkap kemampuan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal-soal pemahaman matematis pada kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol, penelitian ini juga memberikan gambaran pelaksanaan pengajaran yang dilakukan guru di sekolah, gambaran kegiatan belajar siswa di sekolah serta sikap siswa terhadap adanya pengaruh bahasa asing terhadap pemahaman dan komunikasi matematis. Subyek penelitian adalah siswa di salah satu SMP Negeri kota Tangerang, Junior High School, dan Junior School National Plus kelas dua pada semester pertama tahun pelajaran 20013/2014. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan instrumen tes dan non tes. Instrumen tes berupa tes kemampuan pemahaman dan komunikasi matematis yang diberikan pada ketiga kelas, sedangkan instrumen non tes berupa skala sikap, dan lembar observasi hanya diberikan pada kelas eksperimen. Hasil pengolahan data menunjukkan adanya perbedaan kemampuan komunikasi matematis pada kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol, yang artinya pengaruh penggunaan bahasa dapat meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi matematis. Sedangkan pada kemampuan pemahaman kelas pembelajaran Bilingual memiliki peningkatan lebih baik daripada kelas Fully English dan kelas kontrol. Hasil kegiatan pembelajaran yang dilakukan dengan hasil angket terhadap siswa secara umum terungkap bahwa siswa memiliki sikap yang positif terhadap pembelajaran dengan penggunaan bahasa asing. Adapun angket tersebut menanyakan pendapat siswa terhadap komponen pembelajaran yang meliputi: cara mengajar guru, LKS, suasana kelas, penampilan guru, dan minat terhadap pembelajaran matematika dengan penggunaan bahasa asing. This study aims to reveal the mathematical understanding and communication abilities in junior high school students are getting the learning of mathematics with a foreign language (experimental class) and conventional learning (control class). The ability of understanding is the ability to measure instrumental and relational understanding.in addition to exposing the students ability in solving mathematical problems understanding the experimental class and the control class, this study also gives an overview of the implementation of the teachers teaching in schools, a picture of student learning activities in school and students' attitudes toward the influence of foreign languages on mathematical understanding and communication. Subjects were students in one of the Tangerang cities junior high school, junior high school, and junior school national plus two classes in the first semester of academic year 20013/2014. The data was collected using tests and non-test instruments. A test instrument test comprehension and mathematical communication are given in the third grade, while the non-test instruments such as attitude scales, and observation sheets only given in the experimental class. The results indicate a difference in the data processing capabilities of mathematical communication in the experimental group and the control group, which means that the effect of the use of language can improve mathematical communication skills. While the ability of understanding bilingual learning class has a better improvement than fully English class and control class. the results of the learning activities under taken by the students in the focus groups revealed that students generally have a positive attitude towards learning with the use of a foreign language as for the questionnaire asked students' opinions on learning components that include: how to teach teachers, worksheets, classroom atmosphere, teacher performance, and interest in the learning of mathematics with the use of a foreign language.
