Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh tingkat partisipasi belajar siswa masih sangat rendah dalam pembelajaran PKn bergantung pada metode yang dibawakan guru, karakter berpikirnya masih dipengaruhi berpikir kongkrit berbeda dengan tuntutan di SMP yang karakter berpikirnya abstrak, serta gaya mengajar guru yang dapat mempengaruhi kualitas pembelajaran. Melalui penelitian ini dengan pembelajaran model word square, siswa diharapkan dapat meningkatkan partisipasi belajar pada pembelajaran PKn. Metode penelitian ini adalah studi deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data, wawancara, angket, observasi dan studi dokumentasi. Adapun subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah guru mata pelajaran PKn dan 36 siswa kelas VII-B. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, diperoleh hasil bahwa (1) perencanaan pembelajaran PKn dengan model word square lebih efektif digunakan untuk jenjang sekolah tingkat SMP kelas VII, dengan komponen perencanaan Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran (RPP), silabus, sumber belajar, materi dan bahan ajar, Lembar Kerja Siswa (LKS), dan media belajar, (2) pelaksanaan pembelajaran PKn dengan model word square sangat tepat digunakan pada pertemuan pertama dan kedua kegiatan pembelajaran yang notabene siswa diarahkan untuk mengenal konsep dasar materi Hak Azasi Manusia (HAM), (3) peningkatan kemampuan berpartisipasi siswa secara individu terlihat dengan timbulnya keterampilan sosial, keterampilan berpikir kritis, keterampilan mengemukakan pendapat, keterampilan mencari solusi, berpikir cermat, efektif, teliti, giat mencari informasi, keterampilan mengambil keputusan, kemampuan memimpin kelompok, keterampilan mengkomunikasikan hasil pemikiran, kemampuan berinteraksi, berinisiatif sedangkan secara kelompok kemampuan berpartisipasi belajar siswa terlihat dengan adanya keberanian untuk saling membantu dan berkontribusi dalam penyelesaian LKS, kekompakan yang terjalin dengan baik, keaktifan antar siswa untuk beradu jawaban, kerjasama dalam mencari jawaban dan motivasi untuk mendapat nilai tertinggi, ketepatan dalam menjawab soal yang tertera dalam LKS, kreativitas antar kelompok belajar, (4) hambatan dan kendala yang ditemui pada implementasi model word square adalah keterbatasan waktu pelaksanaan pembelajaran, ketajaman dan aspek analisis soal tidak begitu mendalam, LKS yang harus dibuat dalam aplikasi correl draw sehingga guru harus melek akan teknologi, dan akan lebih banyak mengeluarkan biaya untuk membuat LKS, upaya untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut guru harus selalu berinovasi dalam mengembangkan desain pembelajaran PKn, aktif dalam penggunaan teknologi yang diintegrasikan dengan pembelajaran PKn. Motive of this research is level in Participation of Student Learning is still low In Civics Education Study based on teacher's method, the character thinking is still influence by thinking concrete different with in junior high school who the character of thinking is abstract, and teaching style of teacher who can influence the quality of study. Through this research with word square model learning, hope the students can increase their learning participation on civics education study. This research method was descriptive research with data accumulation techniques, interview, questionnaire, observation, and documentation study. The subject in this research was civics education teacher and 36 VII-B students. Based on research result, we got result that (1) word square model was more effective to used in Junior High School level in VII grade, with planning component implementation plan study, syllabus, source of study, subject and teaching material, LKS, and learning media, (2) implementation in civics education study with word square model was accurate to use in first and second meeting who the students were aim to know foundation concept of Human Right, (3) increasing participation ability of students with individual seen from the rising social capability, capability to think critical, skill to show opinion, capability to searched solution, tried to think accurate, effective, accurate, active to searching information, capability to make decision, capability to lead the group, capability to communicate the thinking result, social capability, initiative eventhough in group the participation capability of student learning seen with there are bravery to help each other and contribute to fill the LKS, good harmonious, the activities student to answer each other, cooperation to found the answer and motivate to got higher score, correctly to answered the question in LKS, creativity between other group study, (4) the obstruction and obstacle in this word square implementation model were limited of time to implementation the study, sharpness and analysis question aspect was not comprehend, the LKS must be made in correl draw application, so the teacher must be understand about technology, and will take more expense to make LKS, the effort to overcome the problem the teacher must always make innovation in increasing design of civics study, be active in use technology in integrate the civics education study.
