Ateisme merupakan isu tabu terutama di negara seperti Indonesia. Berlawanan dengan teis yang kepercayaan dan kepatuhannya terhadap Tuhan dianggap sebagai kebaikan, ateis pun diprasangkai sebagai sepenuhnya destruktif. Oleh karena itu, status identitas sebagai ateis pun tidak mudah untuk diterima secara sosial, terlebih lagi untuk mengungkapkannya secara terang-terangan. Lalu, mengapa seseorang tetap menjadi ateis? Penelitian naratif ini ingin mengetahui latar belakang di balik alasan seseorang menjadi ateis dengan menelaah seperti apa proses pengambilan keputusannya. Hasil studi yang dilakukan kepada tiga ateis menemukan bahwa peralihan dari teis ke ateis dilalui dengan melewati lima tahapan proses atau five sequential stages sebagaimana yang digambarkan oleh Janis & Mann. Proses tersebut adalah apparaising the challenge yang meliputi proses pertentangan terhadap agama; surveying alternative dan weighing alternative yang meliputi proses pencarian dan pertimbangan; serta deliberating about commitment dan adhering despite negative feedback yang meliputi proses berkomitmen pada pilihan dan menjalani pilihan. Hasil penemuan lainnya mengungkapkan bahwa daripada alternatif pilihan, ateis lebih mungkin jika dikatakan sebagai konsekuensi ketika pertentangan terhadap agama terjadi. Atheism is a taboo, particularly in a country like Indonesia. Opposing theist which the belief and submission toward God considered as goodness, atheist is judged as totally destructive. Hence, identity as atheist is not easy to be accepted socially, moreover to openly confess it. Then, why one remain become atheist? This narrative inquiry conducted to know the reason behind why one become atheist by studying the process of their decisional making. Outcome of the study conducted to three atheist found that conversion from theist to atheist passed through five process of stages or five sequential stages as described by Janis & Mann. Those processes are appraising the challenge that include of process conflicting toward religion; surveying alternative and weighing alternative that include process of seeking and weighing; and deliberating about commitment and adhering despite negative feedback that include commiting to one choice and living the choice. The other finding argue that instead of being an alternative choice, atheist is more likely become a consequence when conflict toward religion happen.
