520 | |a This research examines the issue of characters' deconstruction in contemporary fairy tales The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling (2008). It aims to identify the predominant binary oppositions that govern the central characters and investigates how the reversion of these binaries in reconstructing character of the protagonists in the tales can create new interpretation. The research employs descriptive qualitative method to analyze the issue. All the data are analysed based on Barry's (1998) simplified version of deconstruction concept proposed by Derrida and theory of literary character proposed by Nikolajeva (2002). From the analysis, the binaries which dominate protagonists' characteristics demonstrate few similarities to the classic archetype which subverted into more open rather than closed quality, complex rather than simple, symbolic rather than literal, half-fragmented rather than completely unified, and incoherent. This research further observes that all the protagonists in the four out of five short fairy tales reveal the presence of reconstruction of character. In deconstruction's perspective, the presence of an attempt to reconstruct the characters from their traditional archetype happens only partially. It can be assumed that the tales are not wholly deconstructed. The attempt of deconstructing the tales occur on textual stage in forms of: 1.) positional shifting of central character; 2.) gendered-power shifting of collective protagonists; 3.) incoherency in trait development of the main character; and 4.) the construction of anti-hero protagonist. However, two of the tales still indicate pertinence to the same conventional stereotyping of women subservience to men in fairy tales as well as retaining the conventional motif and plot structure of the fairy tale. Rowling The Tales of Beedle the Bard (2008). | ||
