Summary:This research was based on the field observation to VII-D class in SMP Negeri 12 Bandung, where researcher found the problem, which was the lack of students' self-confidence. This problem could be seen through several situations: first, was when the students were asked to share the results of group-work discussion in front of the class, no one would participate, which made the discussion session not effective: second was in the discussion session, instead of expressing their thoughts on the topic enthusiastically, they shared their personal problems; and third was when they were asked to come in front of the class in order to answer teacher's questions, no one participated. Thus, to overcome this problem, researcher offered Debate as a solution to develop students' self-confidence in expressing thoughts. This research used Debate Method, which was conducted through three cycles. This research also used field observation sheet, scoring sheet for discussion process, field notes, interviews, and questionnaires as the data collection. The results showed that debate method was successful to develop students' self-confidence in in the learning process of social study. The results of this research showed that every cycle developed significantly. The score was gained through the result of group discussion session where the Debate method was applied. The score for the first cycle was categorized as "less", the second cycle was categorized as "enough", and the third cycle was categorized as "good". Therefore, it can be concluded that the application of Debate method enhanced students' self-confidence in the learning process of social study in class of VII-D SMP Negeri 12 Bandung. ;--- Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi dari hasil observasi lapangan yang dilakukan oleh peneliti di SMP Negeri 12 Bandung, khususnya di kelas VII-D. Dalam kegiatan observasi lapangan, peneliti menemukan Permasalahan yaitu kurangnya karakter percaya diri siswa dalam mengemukakan pendapat. Hal ini terlihat pada proses kegiatan pembelajaran dikelas diantaranya, Pertama ketika diperintahkan oleh guru untuk mempersentasikan hasil diskusi kelompok, tidak yang berani menyampaikan hasil diskusinya. Sehingga proses diskusi tidak berjalan efektif. Kedua, ketika sedang berdiskusi peserta didik tidak mengemukakan pendapatnya mengenai materi pelajaran melainkan curhatan pribadi siswa tersebut. Ketiga, ketika diperintahkan oleh guru untuk ke depan menjawab pertanyaan peserta didik tidak ada yang berani kedepan menjawab pertanyaan. Untuk mengatasi permasalah tersebut, maka peneliti menawarkan solusi berupa penerapan metode debat untuk meningkatkan karakter percaya diri siswa dalam mengemukakan pendapat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Penelitian Tindakan Kelas dengan melaksanakan 3 siklus. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan oleh peneliti yaitu lembar observasi lapangan, format penilaian proses diskusi, catatan lapangan, wawancara. Pelaksanaan proses pembelajaran dengan menggunakan metode debat untuk meningkatkan karakter percaya diri siswa dalam mengemukakan pendapat pada pembelajaran IPS dikatakan berhasil. Hasil penelitian ini mengalami peningkatan yang signifikan pada setiap siklusnya. Perolehan nilai didapatkan dari hasil kegiatan diskusi kelompok menggunakan metode debat. Penilaian pada siklus ke 1 masih termasuk pada ketegori "kurang", untuk siklus ke 2 termasuk pada kategori "cukup" dan untuk siklus ke 3 termasuk pada kategori "baik". Dalam hal ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan metode debat dapat meningkatkan karakter percaya diri siswa dalam mengemukakan pendapat pada pembelajaran IPS di kelas VII-D SMP Negeri 12 Bandung.
