| Summary: | An English syllabus based on the students' needs is considered indispensable in view of the fact that the syllabus applied is not based on the needs analysis but rather on the textbook or lecturers' judgment. Concerning the problem, this study attempts to investigate the students' needs of English in a Business School and propose an ESP-based syllabus. The first stage undertaken in this study was needs analysis by identifying the students, the lecturers, target situation, and the present situation. In this stage, questionnaires were distributed to the students and two lecturers. Interviews were undertaken to the English lecturers and the head of accounting study program, and the existing syllabus was analyzed. The result of this stage revealed that students need and want to learn and improve their English skills (speaking, reading, listening, and writing) related to Business and Economy and daily life topics. This study also revealed that the students wished to experience various learning strategies in order to have an effective learning. The next stage of this study was identifying types of English syllabus considering relevant to the students and propose an ESP-based syllabus by formulating the goals and objectives based on the needs' analysis findings. This study found that the relevant syllabus to be used was an integration of functional, skill-based syllabus, and task-based syllabus. Then, the final stage was the design of syllabus based on the needs analysis findings. Based on this study, it is advisable for the study program and the English lecturers to apply and evaluate the proposed syllabus.-----Silabus Bahasa Inggris yang disusun dengan mempertimbangkan kebutuhan siswa dipandang sangat penting mengingat fakta dilapangan bahwa sebagian besar silabus yang digunakan tidak berdasarkan kebutuhan siswa akan tetapi berdasarkan buku atau penilaian dosen. Untuk merespon permasalahan tersebut, penelitian ini ditujukan untuk meneliti kebutuhan siswa di Sekolah Tinggi Bisnis dan Ekonomi dan menyusun silabus untuk English for Specific Purposes. Langkah pertama yang dilakukan adalah menganalisa kebutuhan siswa dengan mengenali siswa, tenaga pengajar bahasa Inggris, target situation dan present situation. Pada tahap ini, angket disebar untuk siswa dan dua dosen. Sedangkan wawancara dilakukan kepada dosen bahasa Inggris dan Ketua program studi akuntansi, serta menganalisa silabus yang digunakan. Hasil dari tahap ini, mengungkapkan bahwa siswa membutuhkan dan ingin mempelajari serta meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris baik pada kemampuan berbicara, membaca, mendengar ataupun menulis dengan dikaitkan pada topik-topik mengenai bisnis dan ekonomi serta kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa siswa berharap untuk dapat merasakan berbagai macam strategi belajar agar situasi belajar menjadi lebih efektif. Tahap selanjutnya adalah menentukan tipe-tipe silabus yang dianggap relevan untuk siswa dan menyusun silabus berdasarkan ESP dengan mempertimbangkan tujuan pembelajaran dan hasil dari analisa kebutuhan siswa. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, tipe silabus yang dinilai relevan untuk siswa adalah functional, skill-based syllabus, dan task-based syllabus. Langkah selanjutnya adalah menyusun silabus berdasarkan jenis silabus yang relevan untuk siswa dan data kebutuhan siswa yang telah dianalisa. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, disarankan untuk program studi dan dosen bahasa Inggris untuk dapat mengevaluasi dan menggunakan silabus yang telah diajukan. |
