520 | |a This study attempts to examine the morphological awareness of 42 Indonesian children between the ages of 5 and 6 in two kindergartens. Specifically, the study aims to observe children's morphological awareness in two schools that have a different belief in terms of teaching reading and writing to their students (calistung and non-calistung). The examination focuses on children's ability in identifying and producing reduplication morphemes. The present study also intends to discover the characteristics of the high-performing and low-performing students in identifying and producing reduplication morphemes. The identification task is adapted from the instrument named 'suffix choice test' by Nagy, Berninger, Abbott, Vaughn, and Vermeulen (2003) while the word analogy task is inspired by Kirby, Deacon, Bowers, Izenberg, Wade-Woolley, and Parrila (2012). This study employed a descriptive quantitative method because the collected data are presented in numerical data in the form of scores on two different types of test. Additionally, numeric responses of each assessed students' characteristics are taken from parents' questionnaire and interview. The findings show that Indonesian kindergarten children aged 5-6 begin to have awareness of reduplication morphemes. By considering the two schools' approach to teaching reading and writing towards children, students in the school which applies direct teaching reading and writing approach (calistung) have a slightly higher awareness in reduplication morphemes. The aspect which noticeably distinguishes the character of high-performing and low-performing students is the home environment. High-performing students tend to enjoy reading or being read to and doing other language-related activities at home. Their parents also have a higher quantity of child-directed speech. Meanwhile, low-performing students tend not to do language-related activities at home and their parents have a low quantity of child-directed speech.-----Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji kesadaran morfologis 42 anak Indonesia berusia 5-6 tahun di dua taman kanak-kanak. Secara khusus, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengamati kesadaran morfologis anak di dua sekolah yang memiliki metode berbeda dalam pengajaran membaca dan menulis kepada siswa (calistung dan non-calistung). Penelitian ini berfokus melihat kemampuan anak dalam mengidentifikasi dan memproduksi morfem reduplikasi. Studi ini juga bermaksud untuk mengobservasi karakteristik siswa dengan performa tinggi dan rendah dalam mengidentifikasi dan memproduksi morfem reduplikasi. Tes identifikasi yang digunakan diadaptasi dari instrumen yang diberi nama 'suffix choice test' oleh Nagy, Berninger, Abbott, Vaughn, dan Vermeulen (2003). Sementara tes produksi diadaptasi dari instrumen yang disusun oleh Kirby, Deacon, Bowers, Izenberg, Wade-Woolley, dan Parrila (2012). Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif deskriptif karena data yang dikumpulkan disajikan dalam data numerik dalam bentuk skor pada dua jenis tes yang berbeda serta tanggapan numerik dari masing-masing karakteristik siswa yang diambil dari kuesioner dan wawancara orang tua. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa anak usia dini di Indonesia berusia 5-6 tahun mulai memiliki kesadaran morfem reduplikasi. Siswa di sekolah yang menerapkan metode calistung terlihat memiliki kesadaran morfologis yang sedikit lebih tinggi dibanding siswa di sekolah yang menerapkan metode non-calistung. Aspek yang terlihat sangat membedakan karakter siswa dengan performa tinggi dan rendah adalah lingkungan rumah. Siswa dengan performa tinggi cenderung gemar membaca dan melakukan kegiatan lain yang berhubungan dengan bahasa di rumah. Orang tua mereka juga memiliki kuantitas berbicara yang tinggi dengan anak dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Sementara itu, siswa dengan performa rendah cenderung tidak melakukan aktivitas yang berhubungan dengan bahasa di rumah dan orang tua mereka memiliki kuantitas berbicara yang rendah dengan anak. | ||
