Description
Summary:A research concerning proposed model on developing professional (in a broad sense) of nursing education students (high school level known as Sekolah Perawat Kesehatan or SPK) through clinical practice in hospital had been conducted at Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital - Bandung from early June 2000 up to the end of October 2000. Variables for this research consist of eleven (ten independent and one dependent). The independent variables chosen for the research are knowledge generated in SPK class, result of clinical practice as perceived by clinical instructor, students' academic achievement on previous level of education, parent's level of education, parent's occupation, while as dependent variable was the result of clinical practice as perceived by clients/patients. Schools' status (private and state), grade attended by students (grade two and three) and location of clinical practice (polyclinic and ward) were considered as dummy variables. These dummy variables are taken due to the nature of the clinical practice itself.Population was calculated and accordingly sample of 308 students consist of second and third year students, 41 clinical instructors of the hospital and 308 clients/patients were drawn using stratified random sampling technique.Peter Jarvis' (1983) theory on professional education states that the first two independent variables and the dependent variable mentioned above are at most important and are related to each other. Likewise, an integrative education approach with bed-side teaching & nursing model cited by Schoemaker (1989), Brown (1982) and Deback (1980) considered the above variables as the ultimate ones and are related among each other. Other three independent variables in the research were used in connection with the social mobility structure from Havinghurst & Neugarten (1967). It was known through researches that there is a relationship between parents' occupation, parents' level of education and students' academic achievement.Questionnaires for respected respondents were used in data collection. Analysis was done based on the data scale, while descriptive-analytic and inductive method became the most appropriate approach. The first method of analysis was used in order to get illustrative phenomenon on clinical practice, while the second chosen one was an approach to understand relationship among variables. Results of analysis indicate that there is a significant relationship among variables. All dummy variables have strong relation towards the result of clinical practice as perceived by clients/patients. At the level of 0.01, students' academic achievement on previous level of education is significant towards knowledge gathered in SPK class. On the contrary, relationship between the remaining variables are nonsignificant. Therefore, the overall results of analysis does not fully correspond with the forwarded theories.Differences in expectations and values among respondents were greatly shown through this research. Services delivered by students are not fully in accordance with the humanistic approach expected by clients/patients.Due to the above situation, the researcher forwarded a proposed model which allows great possibilities in eliminating differences in values and expectation among respondents. Humanistic touch expected by clients/patients as well as acceptable level of knowledge, skill and attitude of students entering the arena of clinical practice are elaborated and became the center points towards improvements.
