ABSTRAK Analisis terhadap pola retoris dan perkembangan pengetahuan genre adalah istilah dibawah payung penelitian yang sama, analisis genre.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi dan membandingkan pola retoris, step, fitur linguistik, dan perkembangan pengetahuan genre di abstrak yang dibuat oleh dosen lintas bidang dan lintas tingkatan pengetahuan. Peneliti berfokus kepada abstrak yang dbuat oleh dosen pada tesis dan disertasinya dari bidang ilmu sosial dan ilmu eksak di Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Kerangka yang digunakan adalah Analisis Lima Move oleh Hyland (2000). Penemuan mengemukakan bahwa Move 1 - Pembukaan merupakan move yang paling banyak ditemukan di abstrak ilmu eksak dan abstrak tesis, sedangkan Move 4 - Hasil merupakan move yang paling bayak di abstrak ilmu sosial dan disertasi. Di sisi lain, Step 3 dari Move 5 - Pernyataan batasan, tidak ditemukan di seluruh abstrak. Kedua bidang dan jenis teks kebanyakan menggukanan kalimat pasif unuk fitur linguistiknya. Kalimat pada ilmu eksak dan tesis cenderung menggunakan waktu sekarang, tetapi ilmu sosial dan disertasi cenderung menggunakan waktu lampau. Untuk lebih jauh, tidak ada perbedaan signifikan dalam perkembangan pengetahuan genre lintas bidang tetapi terlihat jelas pada tingkatan pendidikan. Data menunjukkan bahwa ada kesamaan tertentu dalam penulisan abstrak untuk menonjokan aspek terpenting dari tiap abstrak. ABSTRACT Rhetorical move analysis and genre knowledge development analysis are the terms under the same umbrella, genre analysis. The aims of this study are to identify and compare the rhetorical moves, steps, linguistic features, and genre knowledge development of the abstracts of lecturers from across fields and educational level. The researcher focused on the lecturers' abstracts of master's theses and dissertations from soft and hard science field in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The framework utilized was the Five Move Analysis by Hyland (2000). The findings revealed that Move 1 - Introduction was the most common move in hard science and master's thesis abstracts, while Move 4 - Product was the most common move in soft science and dissertations. Furthermore, the most common steps in both fields and text types differed. On the other hand, Step 3 of Move 5 - Stating limitation, did not exist in all abstracts. Both fields and text types mostly employed active voice for linguistics features. Hard science and master's theses tended to use the present tense, but soft science and dissertations tended to use the past tense. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in the development of genre knowledge across fields but it was evident at the educational level. The data revealed that there are certain commonalities in the way abstracts are written to highlight the most important aspects of each abstract.
