Ecologically, ecotourism activities have the characteristic of paying attention to the surrounding environment. Then economically it can be profitable for the community around the ecotourism area. In addition, these activities must empower the surrounding community. This study intends to evaluate the implementation of ecotourism principles as well as the development of ecotourism in the area. The ecotourism development of Mount Merbabu National Park, especially the utilization zone in the Magelang Regency area, has not yet been fully implemented, for example, ecotourism objects around Mount Merbabu National Park have not been properly conditioned and have not implemented ecotourism principles which result in not many tourists visiting the area. The method used is the quantitative descriptive method with data collection techniques, namely the survey method. In addition, qualitative methods are also included in this study. The results showed that 37% of the objects studied were included in ecotourism objects which were very optimal in implementing the ecotourism principles. Then 13% of them are ecotourism locations that are quite optimal, while the other 50% are considered ecotourism objects that are not optimal. This is influenced by many factors such as the local government, managers, to the participation of the local community. Therefore, the development of ecotourism from this problem needs to be done.
